Mock Bvlgari Advertisement

by Sab on April 26, 2011

For those of you who enjoyed the Hash Brown Maker, here’s another picture of his beautifully sculpted abs – taken that weekend back in February, with extremely minimal editing. Unlike Edward in New Moon, his abs aren’t drawn on. This is actually what they looked like with the natural window light streaming in. This was the first shot out of the camera, no elaborate setup or posing direction.

I’m amazed with how well defined the muscles are, and can only imagine the amount of work that must go into maintaining this kind of shape. I struggle with fitness so seeing form like this is inspirational.

Vocaloid Cosplay: Rin and Len – Gemini

by Sab on April 24, 2011

Another one from January’s trip to Melbourne, this time Rin and Len from Gemini song’s videoclip on the Japanese synthesized singing game, Vocaloid. I was browsing through the images and felt compelled to edit some of them for upload despite having study to do… as you can tell from the recent flurry of blog posts over the last couple of days, I am really good at procrastination!

This shoot was fun! After the morning’s Dream of Doll studio shoot, it was a breath of fresh air to get outside (literally, heh) and not be constrained by fixed light sources. I love natural light. There is so much freedom to move and even with a reflector, it’s much more mobile than a light stand if you have super awesome helpers to hold them for you.

Here are some of the photos I liked best!
Cosplayers: Rin, the one in a dress - Siera (deviantART); Len, the one in pants - Aly (deviantART).

Closeup

Thank you to K and Blair for helping me carry ridiculous amounts of camera gear around the park grounds and of course, Aly and Siera for being awesome, obviously I couldn’t have taken these photos without them :D For almost all cosplay shoots, I am unfamiliar with the source material and rely heavily on my models to send me reference material and give me a verbal rundown of the emotions they’re trying to capture in the images, choose poses that are in character. I try to bring whatever I can to the table to make it all come together. This is why I am not really a “cosplay photographer”. I enjoy taking photos of cosplay, not because of a love of the reference material, but because I like the people in my photographs.

Here are a couple of outtakes – I loved these flowers outside the cottage, they were striking with their vibrant purples and pinks, however I could not do justice to the flowers without having Aly at ant-size.

So many pretty flowers

I sent a bunch of photos from this shoot to Siera earlier in the week, so there may be alternate edits popping up soon!

Out take!

Finally getting around to posting photos from the Dream Of Doll shoot I did in January this year, over in Melbourne. I didn’t have all my studio equipment on me, but ShinoMatrix let us use his house for a studio setup and was great help with moving stands around. ShinoMatrix’s gear included a two-stand white backdrop and we used my three flashes and triggers with his three flash stands and a handful of white umbrellas. Here’s a behind-the-scenes shot taken at the wide end of K’s awesome 10-20mm lens:

Lighting setup

In terms of the final lighting setup, I had two lights at 45 degrees to the model on either side; one main light which was shot through a white umbrella and one fill light that was half the power of the main (the picture looks different because the lights were moved for littlecrane’s shots, her hat was proving problematic). ShinoMatrix normally had his third light for filling the white backdrop with an even spread of light so I kept that in place. However, I wanted another light source to add dimension and so we commandeered a full length mirror from the loungeroom and used it to bounce back some of the other lights and create a rim light.

In terms of lenses and angles, I was standing on top of a kitchen counter several metres away, using either my 50mm or 85mm lenses. I wanted to be as far back as possible and avoid using the wide 24mm, as I knew that this would distort the image and the result would not be as doll-like. It would have been great to have a 200mm lens and be further back, but you have to work within your environmental constraints :)

So without further blather about the photography, here are the photos! Click on the names of the talented cosplayers to get more info about the costumes that they’ve constructed themselves and see their fantabulous deviantART accounts.

Brunch at Milk and Honey – Northbridge

by Sab on April 23, 2011

The bright yellow hexagonal pattern outside Milk and Honey on James St caught our eye and we headed over to investigate it as a lunch option. There were many tasty-looking sandwiches in the display cabinet, however much to our delight, we discovered that breakfast foods were served until 2pm on Saturdays and Sundays so that is what we ordered. I ordered watermelon juice and “Healthy Breakfast” whilst Lee had apple, orange and carrot juice (you can combine up to 3 choices from their list), and “Spanish Breakfast”.

Food was good, not writing a review of the place – just keen to post pictures, so here they are:

Viet Nosh – Nedlands

by Sab on April 22, 2011

Suz and I felt like some Asian food for dinner, so I chose Viet Nosh on Hampden Road in Nedlands. I had eaten here a small handful of times for lunch and enjoyed the beef pho and vietnamese spring rolls, so I was eager to go back and try something else on the menu. I also knew that Suz preferred chicken that didn’t have bones in it and had previously noticed several non-bone options on the menu.

I read somewhere that it was important to make a booking for this place and I would agree. When we walked in, the great majority of tables had “reserved” plastic signs on them, even though it was a Wednesday night. Whilst Suz and I sipped our lychee drinks (pictured below) and chatted, the restaurant filled up completely and ontop of that, there was a fairly constant stream of people coming in to pick up takeaway orders.

Lychee Drink - Closer

The lychee drinks were alright, mine contained four canned lychees, the largest of which was perched atop the drink at the rim of the glass. The other three were trapped underneath an avalanche of ice. I had to use my spoon to manoeuvre around the ice and get at these lychees because there was so much ice that did not melt.

By the time we received our mains, I was so hungry that I completely forgot about photographing my meal (not because service was slow, I was hungry due to having exercised earlier in the day). I ordered the stir-fry beef noodles, which were delicious. I enjoyed the salty and fresh Vietnamese flavours, as well as the texture of soft rice noodles against crunchy bean sprouts. There was a generous amount of thinly sliced beef, much to my delight – both as a meat lover and a female with a history of iron deficiency. I was almost finished when I remembered about the plan to take some pictures for my blog, so I just took a picture of what remained.

As you can see, Suz’s meal in the blurred background (prawn curry) is considerably less demolished than mine. This is due to the fact that I was multitasking by munching and listening whilst she recounted stories about things like Dragon Age 2.

As an aside, we noticed that the words “Chicken Maryland” appeared several times on the menu. Neither of us were sure what that meant, however the helpful and accurate pictures that were next to each menu item hinted at the idea that Chicken Maryland was chicken on the bone. Some further investigative work on the internet has confirmed that in Australia, Chicken Maryland refers to the quarter chicken cut that includes the thigh and leg.

Anyway, I really enjoyed my reasonably priced and tasty meal (I think Suz did also?). I was amazed that we sat there for two hours without being rushed out of the restaurant or hinted to leave (y’know, the “do you want any desserts / tea / coffee / your bill?”), which was a pleasant surprise. I would recommend this place for the reasonable price, tasty food, range of options on the menu and non-intrusive service.
