Gossip Girl Day

This blog will be primarily photography related, but occasionally I will post up other hobby-related activities that I have been up to, ie. sewing.

Last Sunday, I went over to Skye’s house along with a couple other friends to marathon Gossip Girl episodes and sew some crossover ties (as worn by Blair and Jenny in the series).

Gossip Girl is totally trashy and I’m sure there are many who, understandably, cannot stand it. It is one of several guilty pleasures on Foxtel, there’s something delightfully engrossing about the rich, complicated world Gossip Girl creates and if you don’t take it too seriously, it is very amusing and entertaining!

Above is a group photo of us trying to emulate the Gossip Girl promo shots for laughs :) It was dark by the time we took these so I threw together an uninspiring flash setup and my tripod to take the photos. I wore the huge glasses because I thought they were Nelly Yuki-esque!

Cosplay Photoshoot: Epic Win

When we got to our location, immediately I could feel the eyes on us; the staring had begun. People were standing stock still, frozen in time, with their mouths almost agape as if they had been caught in a spell. Cars drove by at a crawl in the car park. The more adventurous crept closer to have a better look, some with cameras, poorly hidden behind bushes to avoid attracting our attention. A young girl and her sister edged past us, kept a constant distance of about 2 metres, during which they watched us intently. It was quite surreal.

Emo Photoshoot with Aly

Aly got an awesome emo haircut a few months back. We decided to have a little emo-themed photoshoot in celebration of her new hairstyle.

I processed the photos to make them look really over-the-top grungy (this means sacrificing image quality, amongst other things). Then, I arranged 22 of the photos into a surprise photobook for Aly’s birthday! I currently do not print many of my photographs, so it was really exciting to finally see my photos in print and in a book!

Here are a selection of the photographs I processed from that day:

BTW: If anyone knows a real emo / scene kid in Perth, who would be interested in a photoshoot - drop me a line! :)

Nick & Jess’ Wedding

Nick and Jess are the beautiful couple who asked me to photograph their wedding :) This was the very first time I had taken wedding photos. I was very tired by the end of the ceremony and family photos, but it was a positive experience overall :)

I usually do a lot of posed portraits, so the wedding was a refreshing change from that sort of work. There was no sign of a bridezilla from what I could tell and everyone there was extremely nice to me! I felt like I learned a lot that day, having a lot of limitations to work around such as lighting conditions in the church and more obviously non-repeatability and time constraints. I believe limitations are what bring out creativity anyway :) But I’ll ramble more on that another time.

In my reading before the wedding, I came across a useful tip: nominate a person who knows the bridal party and family to herd people in an out of family photos for you. This made the posed group shots heaps easier and less stressful!

Also, I felt that having Bert with me as second shooter was comforting! Thanks Bert ^_^ It’s nice not to go it alone sometimes, and in an event scenario like this, it’s useful to capture different angles of the action.

Here’s a small selection of my pictures from the day:

My only regret is not capturing more photos of the bride getting ready, but I couldn’t because of a scheduling clash - I was taking group shots of the groomsmen during that time!

Anyhow, Nick and Jess told me they were very happy with the photos :)
