For the last 8 weeks, I have been busy as a bee, shooting and editing photos for critique as part of the Finding the Light workshop. It has been an amazing experience and along the way, I have learned to work confidently with natural light at any time of day and been re-inspired to shoot portraits. I have gone back to basics, experimented with my camera settings and learned how to shoot with appropriate exposure so my photos look right straight out of the camera. I’ve also come to appreciate the precision that spot metering on my new camera allows, as well as rediscovering the joy of my Canon 85mm f/1.8 lens – it’s no L series, but it’s not bad :)
I’ve also learned about perserverance and dedication. There were certainly times when I had uni tests or assignments due, stress levels were skyrocketing, and I couldn’t face the thought of having to find time to do the assignments but somehow, I found a way to complete every single one (except I just have one more to go…). Another thing that made life interesting was trying to find people to be in my photos every week! Thank you to my models <3
Below, I’ve put in below a selection of the assignments I’ve turned in over the course:

Thank you so much Detra for teaching me so much about working with natural light. I’ve learned so much also from the posts and comments from Detra, Gail, Jenny B and the rest of the girls on the forum. I definitely felt like the Finding The Light forum was a safe environment to give and receive constructive criticism and feedback which has ultimately improved my work.
I look forward to participating again in the next Finding the Light workshop as Alumni. It was a significant investment of time and a modest investment of money, however I got so much out of trying to read and understand the materials provided, participating on the forum, experimenting with the camera and making my own notes; it was well worth it!!

A few weeks back Jill, Teresa and I went out to do a shoot of Jill’s Ranka Lee cosplay, here are the results! Jill is the adorable Ranka Lee (from the anime Macross Frontier) and Teresa was my fantabulous photography assistant and scout. I love working in tiny little teams like this :3

Here are the last lot of photographs from the series of three blog posts I’ve made with these The Last Remnant cosplay photos of Jen and Min. We shot against the sky for these, as it provided a clean backdrop and the clouds infused a nice, moody atmosphere.

That’s all from me of Jen and Min, hope you liked them, I would like to shoot with them again sometime soon!!

As promised, here’s the next post in my The Last Remnant cosplay series featuring some of my favourite shots of Min and a couple of group shots with Jen as well. These were photographed back in July this year (2011).

Here’s a couple of group shots, they look much better large! Click on the images to see them bigger :)

The detail and workmanship that went into Jen and Min‘s The Last Remnant cosplay at Perth Supernova was just amazing. For the uninitiated – these girls make the outfits from start to finish, using reference pictures, sourcing appropriate materials, spending many hours cutting, sewing and figuring out how to shape armour / props from base materials.

I have wanted to photograph these two together and finally got the opportunity in July this year (2011). Up close, the costumes were just as impressive as what I saw on stage, with embroidery detail and painstakingly sewed pleather seams. I’ll post these photos over a few posts, to start off with here’s Jen’s Emma Honeywell cosplay. Photography notes and credits at the end!

Min’s David Nassau cosplay will be featured in the next post, stay tuned or see her deviations below :)
